Whipped Shea butter - 2 easy methods for making it
Our fair trade unrefined raw shea butter is good to be used just as it is. If you, however, want to have smoother, fluffier consistency to your butter, try whipping it. There are two methods for making whipper shea butter. Both will be explained below. I’m used to make Mamaa Whipped Shea Butter through first melting it. However, I’ve lately turned to whipping it unmelted. Our sauna comes in handy for this (as my background is Finnish, could not live without it :-). I first warm up the shea lukewarm in sauna (40-50 C) and whip it after. But you can also whip it in normal room temperature in small chunks.
Note that all the whipped body butters get harder after they are completely set, in a day or two. To keep the butter softer and to add some luxury to it, you cab add some of our 100% pure refined Baobab Oil to the mix. That will help to keep your whipper butter less dense and adds valuable Omega 3, 6, 9 fatty acids to you mix.
Whipped shea butter - melting method
Slowly melt the shea butter in a double boiler (no excessive heat!)
Remove the butter from the burner. You can now add baobab oil and vitamin E, but not yet essential oils
Let the oil cool off to room temperature. I normally place the container in a bowl with ice to speed up the process
When it is cooled down to 23-25 C you can add the essential oils
Whip the mix while it is still liquid. This is the first part of the double whipping :-)
Put the mix into ice or in the fridge until it’s completely solid
Take it out of the fridge and and whip it again
When you think that the consistency is about right scoop the shea in your final containers. If you have smaller jars (like out 15ml tins) it might be a good idea to pour the whipped butter first in a zip lock bag. Then cut a corner off and squeeze the butter into your jars
See our video on making whipped shea with baobab oil below.
Whipper shea butter - non-melted
Cut the shea butter in small chunks. It really helps if the shea is a bit warm - so try to keep it a warm place before you start doing this
If you have stand mixer like a KitchenAid, great. Make use of it. But you can also use regular hand mixer. But the chunks in a bowl and first start whipping the chunks on high
While whipping scrape down the butter that sticks to the sides, and keep whipping until it looks homogenous
Slowly add other oils (like baobab oil) and essential oils as needed and keep whipping
